Hidden Valley Leachate Treatment Plant
The Hidden Valley Leachate Plant processes the liquid that has leached from the landfill contents. The leachate flows through several steps of treatment that improves its safety before being able to dispose into the county sewer system.
How Does the Leachate Plant Work
Collection & Equalization
Leachate is collected from the landfill through pipes and trenches and pumped into an equalization tank. Here, the leachate is aerated, temporarily stored, and prepared for treatment by balancing flow rates.
Chemical Treatment
The leachate undergoes a multi-stage chemical process where contaminants are removed. Chemicals are added to neutralize particles, precipitate metals, and form larger solids (floc) that can be separated from the liquid.
Biological Treatment
The treated liquid passes through a bio-tower where microorganisms break down remaining organic compounds. After final pH adjustment, the cleaned water is transferred to the sewer system for further municipal treatment.
